With over three decades of experience, including 15 years in senior roles, I have significantly advanced the molecular biosciences through both teaching and research. My academic journey began with a degree in Biological Sciences (Molecular Biology) from Reading, followed by a doctorate in Zoology. Most of my career has been in academia, with a brief stint at the Babraham Institute. My expertise lies in identifying novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets, as well as pedagogic research, where I have published over 100 articles, including research papers, reviews, book chapters, conference proceedings, and two patents.
Currently, I serve as the Director of Learning and Teaching, an Associate Professor, and have been the Course Leader for Biochemistry/Medical Biochemistry at Kingston University's School of Life Sciences, Pharmacy & Chemistry. My role encompasses leadership, providing strategic direction, and oversight of learning, teaching, assessment, and the student experience. I have also ensured compliance with regulatory processes and contributed to policy making. In the wider scientific community, I engage in scientific outreach, have sat on the editorial boards of several journals, and actively participate in professional societies such as the Royal Society of Biology, Biochemical Society, Society for Endocrinology, and Zoological Society of London.
I am recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, a Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, Chartered Biologist (CBiol), and Chartered Science Teacher (CSciTeach). My contributions to teaching and learning have been acknowledged with Kingston University's Provost's Award for Learning and Teaching Excellence and several other university awards highlighting my sustained contribution to employability, enterprise, professional development, and the inclusive curriculum. Nationally, I am recognised as a National Teaching Fellow (NTF) and have been a finalist in the National Enterprise Educator Awards (highly commended) and the Pearson HE Innovate Awards (Most Innovative Approach to Developing Employability Skills).
School Director Learning & Teaching
My scientific research background has been predominantly in the identification of novel diagnostic biomarkers and therapeutic targets where I have published nearly 100 articles including research, review, book chapters, conference proceedings and two patents. Major scientific discoveries include the identification of an association of neurokinin B (NKB) with pre-eclampsia, the endokinins (novel tachykinins), the six members of the apolipoprotein L (apoL) protein family and splice variants of pregnancy associated plasma protein-E (PAPP-E).
I am also involved in a range of projects conducting pedagogic research including those involving student experience, progression metrics, awarding gaps, understanding commuting students, the inclusive curriculum, personal tutoring, and professional development.
