Knowledge Transfer Partnerships at Kingston University
What is a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP)?
A Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP) is a collaborative initiative, part-funded by the UK government, connecting businesses with universities and talented graduates to drive innovation and strategic growth.
KTPs provide businesses with access to cutting-edge academic expertise and a skilled graduate (known as the associate) to lead innovative projects. These partnerships have been instrumental in helping businesses improve processes, develop new products, and access new markets.
Innovate UK funds up to 67% of project costs for SMEs and up to 50% for larger companies. Most partnerships run for 12–36 months. At Kingston University, we have supported over 13,000 partnerships that have linked businesses with the UK's world-class knowledge bases to deliver innovation projects led by talented graduates, delivering an 800% return on investment.

Yes. KTPs work with a range of sectors, including manufacturing, design, marketing, and even public sector organisations like the NHS. Your business must show it can support the project financially and managerially, with clear commercial benefits outlined from the start.
From the initial meeting to application submission usually takes two months, followed by recruitment within a month of approval. Projects can last up to three years, and it’s possible to run two programmes at once.
With KTP, the graduate (associate) is employed by Kingston University, not added to your payroll. The programme also includes subsidised allowances for travel, expenses, and equipment.
The associate works full-time in your company as part of your team, following your hours and regulations. They can also access University expertise, facilities and resources, such as advanced equipment and databases.
Kingston University handles most administrative tasks. Your main role is to co-supervise the associate with the academic advisor.
Kingston University will help craft a detailed project proposal and provide ongoing guidance. Once approved, the associate spends 90% of their time working at your company, with academic support ensuring knowledge transfer. The associate may also pursue additional training or even a higher degree, benefiting the project.
