Athena SWAN underpins gender equality at Kingston
University receives bronze award by Athena SWAN.
At Kingston, we work hard to improve gender equality for students and staff. In recognition, the University was awarded a Bronze Athena SWAN charter mark in 2023, building on previous awards in 2013 and 2017. Several of our schools and departments also hold individual Bronze and Silver Athena SWAN awards at local levels.
We continue to strive for equality in Higher Education and work towards a full Silver Award in 2026.

What is Athena SWAN?
The Athena SWAN Charter is a global scheme designed to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research.
The Charter is based on a set of principles that institutions use to help focus and structure their gender equality work to bring about positive change across the gender spectrum.
The charter uses a targeted self-assessment framework to support applicants, identify areas for positive action as well as recognising and sharing good practice around inclusive working practices.
Universities can apply for institutional and departmental Athena Swan awards recognising their gender equality achievements.

Our Athena SWAN co-chairs
Dr Ali-Al-Kinani and Dr Ricarda Micallef lead the Athena SWAN submission for Kingston University.
I strive to ensure gender equality for all members of the University community. This will build on the work already completed by multiple departments and schools across the institution.
As a minority ethnic male co-chair of the institutional Athena SWAN, I live the principle of equality for all staff and students of all backgrounds and aim to champion intersectionality and gender as a spectrum.
