Travel
Opting for more sustainable transport is a lot better for the environment. Find out what we’re doing to encourage staff and students to travel to and from campus sustainably.

Choose the greener route
Minimise your impact on the local environment by opting for more sustainable travel.
We’re committed to sustainable travel. While maximising the accessibility of our sites for students, staff and visitors, we also try to minimise the negative impacts of University-related travel.
Our Travel Plan outlines our sustainable travel goals. We hope to achieve these goals through a combination of infrastructure improvements, incentives and policy directives.

Travel Policy
Sustainable travel to, from and around Kingston University
We are committed to facilitating sustainable travel to, from and around our sites.
If you are visiting us, there are plenty of sustainable travel options available. Whether you’d like to walk, cycle, use public transport or drive your electric vehicle, we can help.
See how to get here using your preferred mode of transport on our directions page.
We offer our staff interest-free loans to buy public transport season tickets to travel to and from work.
We also help our staff purchase discounted bikes for commuting through the Bike2Work Scheme.
Both schemes provide staff with more sustainable travel options, so they can leave their car at home.
The free hybrid Kingston University intersite bus service provides around 4,000 passenger journeys a day during term time.
The service takes passengers to each of our campus sites, halls of residence and sport facilities.
For more details, view the intersite bus service information or view the bus timetable.
We encourage staff and students to cycle to our campuses in the following ways:
- Bike check sessions hosted by ‘Dr Bike’
- Bike marking events with the police
- Free bike maintenance courses for staff and students
- Bicycle pumps and repair stations across our facilities
- Shower and changing rooms for bike commuters
- Bike2Work Scheme helping staff purchase discounted bikes for commuting
The Dr Bike sessions offer comprehensive bike checks for staff and students. These checks include minor repairs, general maintenance and advice on any major work required.
In the academic year 2023/24, the Bike Dr's spent a total of 24 hours on our campus sites.
Road transport makes up a fifth of UK greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. As the UK looks to reach net zero emissions by 2050, reducing emissions from road transport remains a significant challenge.
If you do drive to the University, lift sharing is a great way to save money, reduce congestion and improve air quality.
We have electric vehicle charging points on our campuses.
We also have electric vehicles for use within our own small service fleet.
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)
Our practices tie in with the United Nations SDGs, which aim to transform our world and promote prosperity for all while protecting our planet.
Our policy on transport supports 'Sustainable cities and communities' and 'Climate action'.
