About
I graduated from the University of Manchester with a BSc (Hons) in Chemistry and a PhD in bioanalysis. I then became a Research Fellow at the European Centre for Nuclear Research (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland, working with the ISOLDE team developing ion source materials for CERN's beam-lines.
Later, I returned to the UK as a Senior Lecturer in Analytical Chemistry at the University of Greenwich. I then became manager of the world's first wholly commercial Accelerator Mass Spectrometry facility and an Honorary Visiting Fellow at the University of York.
Since 1999, I have been at Kingston University as Reader in Analytical Science (2006), Associate Professor (2014) and Professor of Analytical Science (2020). I am Subject Area Lead in Analytical and Forensic Chemistry, the HSSCE Faculty's Director of Postgraduate Research and LSPC Deputy Director of Research and Enterprise.
I have published over 150 articles, including over 70 full peer-reviewed papers and one book, and successfully supervised 27 PhD students, 16 as first supervisor, 3 PDRAs and 4 MRes students.

Research Interests
- The analysis, biochemistry and novel removal (by development of ecofriendly techniques) of elements and compounds of biological and environmental concern.
- Development and validation of methods for analysis of drugs of abuse (e.g. Liquid Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry and Lab-on-a-Chip Technologies) and drug-drug interactions. Our results have demonstrated that hair analysis can be used in addition to urine/blood analyses as a valuable tool for long-term monitoring of drug (ab)use. Owing to the wide detection window, this approach may also offer an alternative approach for out-of-competition testing.
- Development of analytical and radiochemical techniques previously used in nuclear science such for pharmaceutical/biomedical applications.
- Separation and characterisation of compounds obtained from plant extracts and their possible therapeutic use as anti-cancer agents.
