About
I graduated from the Royal College of Art in 1983 and was awarded two Royal Society of Arts design bursaries enabling a three-month study tour of America. Consultancy work followed and an eighteen-year design career with international Design consultancy IDEO, working in London, Tokyo and the USA. Successful projects included award-winning office furniture for Steelcase Strafor, the Baton for the 2002 Commonwealth Games, and consumer products for Ford, Samsung, Halfords and Procter & Gamble.
I joined Kinston in 2006 whilst setting up Cogent, a three-way design partnership specialising in design and engineering innovation. The waterless egg cooker that appeared on Dragons' Den was developed in collaboration with its inventor, James Seddon.
My interests focus on developing innovative relationships with individuals, companies and manufacturers that inform teaching and bind industry creatively within my course and department. This is achieved through academic, commercial and research projects driven by staff and students.
