About
I am known as Diran and am a novelist, memoirist, cultural critic and lecturer in Creative Writing. I read Law at Oxford University before working as a print and television journalist whilst I wrote my first novel, the multi award-winning 'Some Kind of Black'. My research interests include subcultures, race, music, sport, and contemporary UK society. In 2006 I was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Literature. I joined Kingston in October 2015 where I am currently the BA Creative Writing Course Leader.

My research interests include subcultures, race, music, sport, and contemporary UK society. My novels are: 'Some Kind of Black' (Abacus/ Virago, 1996) and 'My Once Upon A Time' (Abacus' 2000). In 2003 I co-edited, with Blake Morrison and Jane Rogers, the British Council anthology 'New Writing 12'. I have written extensively as a cultural critic across the Uk Press and some of my shorter creative writing has appeared in organs such as 'The Times' and in the anthology 'Oxtales' (Profile). I am currently wrting a sport-accented memoir.
