About
My profound passion for interior design and architecture set me on a journey that commenced at the University of Plymouth, where I earned a bachelors degree and RIBA Part I accreditation. Following this, my trajectory encompassed practical experience gained through running my own practice and positions in residential firms in the South-West, before returning to academia to pursue a masters in Architecture at the University of Brighton, where I acquired RIBA Part II qualification.
The next step in my career was to return to the residential sector in London, before joining an AJ100 practice, where I was given the opportunity to design and deliver large-scale million-pound-plus projects, many of which have been successfully realised on site.
This background uniquely positioned me to teach across architecture, interior design and urban design at the University of Brighton at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Here I continue to run a short course in digital skills and representation for masters students.
Presently, my primary role concerns lecturing on the BA Interior Design course at Kingston University with the aim of upskilling the students to help them communicate and represent their designs more effectively, while being mindful of the positive and reflective impact this can have upon the design process. Reflecting on my practice experience, I am always keen to draw links between academia and practice to help the students 'ground' their work in the built environment and encourage them to gain an insight into their future practice.
My research interests involve the practical application of emerging technologies, presently focused on the integration of generative AI into the design process, as a form of early-stage ideation and communication of conceptual development. Alongside this, I have a strong knowledge base in digital manufacturing which is supplemented through my extensive digital capabilities.
Qualifications
- BA (Hons) Architecture RIBA Part I, University of Plymouth
- Master of Architecture (MArch) RIBA Part II, University of Brighton
Domains
I am presently a lecturer in visual literacy, working with students at all years within the BA Interior Design course, teaching both in the design studio and running bespoke workshops on campus aiming to help students develop their skill base both in digital and analogue methods of communication.
Alongside this, I am a visiting lecturer at the University of Brighton. teaching on the masters course in the School of Architecture, Technology and Engineering, specialising in the delivery of sessions geared towards representation and digital skills.
Courses taught
I am present exploring the potential of Generative AI particularly its capabilities for visual outputs and how this can be practically applied into the design process, with the aim of establishing innovative workflows as practical norms. My initial investigations and concerns have been published in AEC magazine, a well-regarded magazine created for practitioners in the design and construction industry. My previous research involved studying the translation of digital data into analogue form through a multi-skilled approach including coding, electronics and digital manufacturing. This work enabled me to develop my knowledge in digital manufacturing, particularly 3D printing, the skills of which I have deployed professionally as a model maker and now enable me to support students who are interested in digital craft within the design studio.
Specialisms
- Generative AI
- Additive Manufacturing
I support the teaching team in devising and maintaining the digital strategy to be applied across the course to maximise students' potential for output at each level, keeping an eye on industry trends and recommending software to be introduced where appropriate.
