About
Following a PhD (London) in the biogeochemistry of potentially toxic metals, I spent 7 years working at some of the leading Environmental Science laboratories, including the James Hutton Institute (Aberdeen) and Lancaster University. Much of my post-PhD work has focused on land and water quality/contamination issues, covering both rural (agriculture and land use intensity/management) and urban sources (sewage effluents and urban runoff) of water pollution. Since joining Kingston University in 2001, while I continue working on soil and water contamination issues, I have developed further research interests, including how climate change may affect soil nutrient dynamics or mobilise naturally occurring potentially toxic metals; soil organic dynamics in agricultural soils; fate of microplastics and emerging organic micro-contaminants (pharmaceuticals, personal care products, plasticisers, and other contaminants of concern) in the aquatic environment.
Qualifications
- PhD (Environmental Science)
- MSc (Soil Science)
- BSc (Hons)
Domains
My teaching focuses on developing basic understanding of soil science, including key soil properties and processes and how the pedosphere is directly linked to the geosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. This provides a good foundation for understanding environmental contamination (land contamination and remediation, major water contaminants and their environmental fate) and global land degradation issues (e.g., excess use of nutrients in agriculture, soil erosion, soil acidification, soil salinisation, land use and land cover change and soil organic carbon loss).I teach across all levels:
GG4001 – Our Dynamic Earth
GG4002 – Introduction to Environmental Science
GG5020 – Land, Water and the Environment
GG6080 – Land and Water Resources Management
GG7015 – Water, Energy and Land Resources Management
Courses taught
Biogeochemical cycling of nutrients, trace elements (both essential and potentially toxic) and organic chemicals in managed and semi-natural ecosystems has been the focus of my work. Much of this has been driven by land use and environment change pressures and how they influence the biogeochemical cycling processes that ultimately determine their retention in soils and sediments, release to water or uptake by food plants. More recently we have been investigating sewage effluents impact on water quality in river systems, climate change mediated mobilisation and transportation of naturally occurring trace elements, land use change and soil carbon dynamics, and organic micro-contaminant dynamics in river systems (water column, sediment and biota).
Specialisms
- Organic carbon dynamics in agricultural soils
- Soil and sediment contamination
- Potentially toxic metals, PAHs
- Land use and catchment water quality (nitrate and phosphate)
- Sewage effluents and river water quality (pharmaceuticals, EDCs and micro plastics)
Scholarly affiliations
- Fellow, The Royal Society of Chemistry

My professional practice (and knowledge exchange & impact) includes several strands:
- I am an invited NERC Peer Review College member, evaluating research proposals (and sitting on grant panels (e.g., Industrial Case Studentship, Highlight Topics and Large Grants) since 2011.
- I regularly review research proposals submitted to ESPRC, the Knowledge Foundation (Sweden), The Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research, Norwegian-Estonian Research Cooperation, ETH (Swiss Federal Institute of Technology Zurich Coop Research Program, and several international funding organisations.
- I have been on the editorial boards of many leading journals e.g., The Science of the Total Environment (2006-2022), Frontier in Environmental Science (2015-2022), Soil and Environmental Health (2023-24) and Journal of Environmental Management (2005-2010).
- I am currently on the editorial board of MDPI Applied Science, and Soil and Environmental Health.
- Currently I am an editor, the journal of Environmental Management (Human-induced Pollution and Environmental Impact section, since 2010) and an associate editor of Frontiers in Environmental Science (since 2021), and Soil and Environmental Health (2024-). I have guest edited several special issues in multiple journals and am an editor of a major textbook (Trace Elements in Soils).
