About
I am a composer with complementary research interests at the intersection of Music, Cognition, and Computing. My compositions range from instrumental works to interactive pieces combining live performers with electronics, and include multimedia collaborations with artist from other domains such as video, dance, and visual design.
I studied composition with Jonathan Harvey and Brian Ferneyhough as part of my doctoral studies at Stanford University where I also worked with Jonathan Berger on research projects. Since 2016 I have been collaborating with Dr. Bob Sturm applying machine learning and AI methods to music.
Qualifications
- PhD (Stanford University 2002)
Domains
Oded Ben-Tal is a composer and researcher working at the intersection of music, computing, and cognition. His composition include both acoustic pieces, works combining instruments with electronics and multimedia work. Recent pieces include Notes for a Future Self (flute, clarinet, cello and percussion; 2020) using deep learning models in the composition process; The chamber orchestra piece Old Wine in Older Bottles - premiered in March 2019; Present Perfect (cello and live electronics written for Matt Barley; 2018).
He was the Co-Investigator on two grants: Data science for the study of calypso-rhythm through history (DaCaRyH) funded through AHRC (UK) Labex (France) Care for the Future (AH/N504531/1) and Engaging three user communities with applications and outcomes of computational music creativity (AH/R004706/1)
