About
I am a geographical information scientist with a wide range of interests related to the integration, analysis and visualisation of diverse and disparate data to address complex environmental and historical questions and problems such as, climate change, the evolution of the planet and life, place names, and the 19th-century Prussian explorer Alexander von Humboldt.
Qualifications
- PhD Applications of Geographical Information Systems to Phylogeography , University of St. Andrews, 2005.
- MSc Geographical Information Systems, UNIGIS University of Huddersfield, 1998.
- PG Diploma Environmental Impact Assessment, University of Aberystwyth, 1990.
- BSc (Hons) Plant and Environmental Biology, University of St. Andrews, 1989.
Domains
My teaching duties are:
- I am Course Director for the the MSc in Environmental Management.
- I lead and tech the fist-year 15-credit GG4003 Digital Mapping module that teaches students how to use desktop and cloud-based Geographical Information Systems to make publication quality maps.
- I teach land use land cover change mapping and species distribution modelling in the second year module GG5180 Ecology and Conservation,
- I teach coastal change mapping, geomorphological mapping and risk mapping in GG5190 Geomorphology and Geophysical Hazards.
- Undergraduate and postgraduate tutor.
- Supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations that use GIS or that evaluate environmental problems related to sustainability.
