Professor Lori Snyder

About

I am involved in educating students from the foundation year, to MSc programmes, to PhDs. In addition, I am active in outreach activities, including Lab in a Lorry visits, offering work experience to sixth form students, and participating in public engagement events, including making on-line content (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=waaC_T2z0-I) (https://bacterialgeneticsbiology.science.blog/). My research focuses on two main areas: combating antibiotic resistant infections and bacterial genetics and genomics. I have developed, with my research team, novel antimicrobials to stop infant blindness from multi-drug resistant bacterial infections. This work was featured in Wired (www.wired.co.uk/article/fight-against-super-gonorrhoea), News Medical (https://www.news-medical.net/news/20201009/Simple-eye-drop-can-treat-antibiotic-resistant-bacterial-infection.aspx), and discussed on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rQUl5-kC1OQ). I also use bacterial genome sequence data to uncover information about pathogens, informing our laboratory investigations. This work was featured in a YouTube interview (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z_ttuJ6l1hI).

In April 2020, my textbook Bacterial Genetics and Genomics was published (https://www.routledge.com/Bacterial-Genetics-and-Genomics/Snyder/p/book/9780815345695).

I began doing genomic analyses and investigating mechanisms of antibiotic resistance during my PhD at Emory University, USA, with Prof. Bill Shafer, where I investigated Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidis. Work on these species continued during my post-doctoral research at the University of Oxford. As a post-doc at the University of Birmingham, I worked as a bioinformatician with Prof. Mark Pallen and Prof. Nick Loman.

In 2013, I was awarded the W H Pierce Prize from the Society for Applied Microbiology in recognition of my substantial contributions to the science of applied microbiology. I have been twice elected to the Prokaryotic Division committee of the Microbiology Society, serve on the Editorial Boards of the journals Microorganisms (MDPI) and Microbial Genomics (Microbiology Society). Funding for my research has been awarded by Sparks, the British Society for Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, the Society for Applied Microbiology, and the Microbiology Society, as well as an NIH award on which I am a collaborator.

Teaching and learning

My teaching is inspired by my passion for bacterial genetics and genomics, which is the focus of my textbook, specifically written to motivate students to explore this exciting field (https://www.crcpress.com/Bacterial-Genetics-and-Genomics/Snyder/p/book/9780815345695?utm_source=individuals&utm_medium=shared_link&utm_campaign=B000928_ke1_1au_1aj_d001). Throughout the book, I have drawn on my decades of experience as an educator to ensure that my writing is clear and supported by illustrations that don't just make the subject easy to understand, but also relatable and interesting. The topic is built from the basics through to current advances and applications. Early chapters are more than simple revision, containing information and insights important for a deep understanding of the field.

My classroom teaching has taken on several innovative approaches to engage students, including group discussions and on-line research in-class to innovate and brainstorm about new antimicrobial drugs. Together we have explored the properties of existing drugs and then discussed what we would want in a new drug and how we would design it, using our smartphones and laptops in class to research what is happening now. Similarly, we have researched and shared in class exciting genome sequencing projects happening to discuss the types of sequence technologies being used, the methods of nucleic acid extractions involved, and the findings of these studies. These have developed students independent research skills, literature reading and search skills, presentation skills, critical analysis skills, and knowledge of the subjects covered in classes.

I am the module leader of our LS7020 Professional Experience module, which gives students the opportunity to gain workplace experiences relevant to their MSc degree during their studies. This was developed by me several years ago, has been praised by the IBMS during accreditation revalidation in 2018, and has also been highly praised by the students who have benefited from it. Through gaining experience in the workplace, students have told me they have found it easier to find placements and felt more confident and able to get the jobs they wanted after their graduation from Kingston University.

In 2015, I became a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (UK) based on my experience and innovations in teaching undergraduate, postgraduate, and research students, as well as mentoring and peer-supporting other academic staff. Since that time, I have engaged in Aurora training and served as an Aurora Role Model and Aurora mentor, participated in Advance HE consultancy, and assisted Advance HE in the pilot development of the external examiner training programme. I have also been part of the Kingston University Beyond Barriers staff mentoring scheme as both a mentor and mentee. Beyond Kingston, I have served as an external examiner to five institutions, four in the UK and one international, as well as examining research degrees here at Kingston University and elsewhere.

My teaching includes research-based teaching. I include students in ongoing research projects as part of their BSc and MSc projects, which has resulted in students being co-authors on peer-reviewed publications and conference abstracts.

I serve on Equality Challenge Unit panels, Kingston University institutional, and Kingston University departmental Athena Swan teams.

Research

My research largely focuses on the pathogenic Neisseria species of bacteria: Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Neisseria meningitidisN. gonorrhoeae causes the sexually transmitted infection gonorrhoea, as well as ophthalmia neonatorum, an infection of the eyes of newborns that can lead to blindness. N. meningitidis causes meningitis and septicaemia, life threatening conditions.

Research in my lab has been addressing the problem of antibiotic resistance in gonorrhoea infections. With the support of the Sparks charity (https://www.sparks.org.uk/) and now Antibiotic Research UK (https://www.antibioticresearch.org.uk/), we have developed a promising new alternative to antibiotics that can be used to treat ophthalmia neonatorum, featured in Wired (https://www.wired.co.uk/article/fight-against-super-gonorrhoea), News Medical (https://www.news-medical.net/news/20201009/Simple-eye-drop-can-treat-antibiotic-resistant-bacterial-infection.aspx), and detailed further here: https://www.kingston.ac.uk/news/article/2392/09-oct-2020-eye-drop-containing-natural-antimicrobial-agent-could-be-key-to-treating-antibioticresistant-bacterial-infection-that/.

Genomics research in my lab has provided novel insights into the genetic make-up of these bacterial pathogens. We are also investigating related non-pathogenic species, which provide alternative treatment options not yet explored. My genomics research led to my W H Pierce Prize from the Society for Applied Microbiology (https://sfam.org.uk/knowledge/awards-and-prizes/wh-pierce-prize.html).

My genomics and antimicrobial research has resulted in numerous peer-reviewed research publications and conference presentations (listed below) selected for REF2014 and REF2021, and European patent 3354264. I am the third generation in my family to hold a patent. My father is named on a patent from his work at Yale University Hospital in respiratory therapy and his father holds a patent designed from his experiences with delivering milk for a dairy in New Haven, Connecticut.

I serve on the Editorial Board for Microbial Genomics. I have reviewed many manuscripts for over 25 quality journals in my field and been reviewer for several UKRI bodies and other national and international agencies.

I have successfully supervised 7 PhD and 2 MSc by Research students who have graduated.

Conference listings limited to those from Kingston University.

Professional practice, knowledge exchange and impact

I am an active member of the Microbiology Society, currently serving as an elected member of the Prokaryotic Division, a committee responsible for the planning and delivery of the Microbiology Society Annual Conference. I am also on the Editorial Board of the Microbiology Society journal Microbial Genomics, having previously served on the Advisory Board. Within the Society, I have also been part of the team that organised the Antimicrobial Drug Discovery from Traditional and Historical Medicine Focused Meeting in 2019 (https://microbiologysociety.org/event/society-events-and-meetings/antimicrobial-drug-discovery-from-traditional-and-historical-medicine-1.html) and I am leading the team organising a Focused Meeting on metagenomics in 2022. Each year, I apply to the Society to recognise one of our students for their achievements with the Undergraduate Microbiology Prize.

I am also actively involved with the Advance HE Equality Challenge Unit Athena SWAN initiative, working to address inequalities in academia. In addition to my roles within Kingston University, I regularly assess applications from other institutions as part of Athena SWAN Award assessment panels and have served as chair of such panels.

Also within AdvanceHE, I participated in the pilot programme to train external examiners and followed-up this training by participating in a trial of an on-line training programme for external examiners. Since that time I have regularly provided feedback to AdvanceHE on how this training has benefited me and those I have mentored. To-date, I have been external examiner for 6 institutions, including one university overseas. I have also been an external research degree examiner for three research degrees at three separate institutions.

As Module Leader for LS7020 Professional Experience, I have worked with outside institutions to provide opportunities for our students to develop their professional practice and knowledge. As an Aurora and Beyond Barriers mentor, I have explored with my mentees the development of their professional practice and networks.

Leadership and management

I am the Admissions, Recruitment, and Outreach Tutor for the Department of Biomolecular Sciences and the Department of Applied and Human Sciences and a portion of the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry. This role is part of the AMF (Academic Management Framework) at Kingston University and involves coordination of responsibilities and scheduling for over 50 members of academic staff participating in Open Days, Experience Days, Clearing, and Outreach activities. I work together with a team of other Admissions, Recruitment, and Outreach Tutors, members of the admissions and marketing team, and admissions tutors to assess our recruitment strategies and improve applicant experiences. In this role I have sought to improve staff work/life balance, whilst satisfying our commitment to delivering quality experiences. I have worked to enhance our Open Days, including the Department of Biomolecular Sciences and the Department of Applied and Human Sciences making use of the Outreach Centre as hub for attendees to meet staff and get answers to questions

My colleagues and I have also been successful in obtaining external funding for new outreach activities to support our public engagement programmes, both at our Outreach Centre at Kingston University and in our Lab in a Lorry (https://www.kingston.ac.uk/schools-and-colleges/book-activities/lab-in-a-lorry/). My Microbiology Society Education and Outreach funding has developed our ‘Identify. Treat.' outreach programme, centred on learning about microbes and how they are identified and treated. Working with staff and students across disciplines, I have also led in the development of a crime scene investigation outreach activity for school-age students involving forensics, geography, biology, pharmacy, and computer science.

I have been an Athena Swan Institutional Self-Assessment Team working group leader and an Athena Swan Departmental Self-Assessment Team working group leader, both with ongoing roles, duties, and responsibilities post-award. Outside of Kingston University, I have been a panel chair at the Equality Challenge Unit for the assessment of Athena Swan applications, as well as having sat on several decision panels.

I am also an assessor for applications to the Higher Education Academy AFHEA, FHEA, and SFHEA through the KAPS programme (https://www.kingston.ac.uk/learning-and-teaching-enhancement-centre/kingston-academic-practice-standards-framework/).

External to Kingston University, I have served on the Microbiology Society Prokaryotic Division since 2015, where my leadership roles involve aspects of organization of the Microbiology Society Annual Conference, an international conference of excellence. I was co-organizer of the Microbiology Society Focused Meeting, Antimicrobial Drug Discovery in Traditional and Historical Medicine in 2019 and am the lead organizer of an upcoming Microbiology Society Focused Meeting on metagenomics (2022).

In 2017, I was fortunate to be supported in my leadership training by Kingston University, through the opportunity to attend the Aurora programme (https://www.advance-he.ac.uk/programmes-events/aurora). I was honoured to be asked to then become an Aurora Role Model and have been pleased to have given back to this experience ever since, sharing my insight with other women across the UK and at Kingston University as an Aurora mentor.

I have also mentored women in the Beyond Barriers programme and am a mentor to an external examiner in another School within the University.
