I am an Organic and Medicinal Chemist with a range of experience of synthetic chemistry from projects in medicinal chemistry and chemical biology. I enjoy working as part of a teaching team, inspiring students with the logical nature and creative power of chemistry while at the same time introducing students to research from my experience in tackling targets as diverse as DNA / RNA analogues, haptens for immunodiagnostics, organometallic chemistry, asymmetric organocatalysis and ionic liquids.
I undertook my BSc (Chemistry), MPhil (Diastereoselective Synthesis) and PhD (Haptens for Detection of Nitro-explosives) at Sheffield University from 1988-1997. After postdoctoral work at Reading (largely Organometallic Chemistry 1997-2001), IISc Bangalore (Asymmetric Solid-Supported Catalysts 2001-2002, also 2005), Manchester UMIST (Pyrrolidine Oligonucleotide Mimics 2002-2004) and DCU Dublin (Chiral, Biodegradable Ionic Liquids 2008-2011) I began work as a Temporary Lecturer in Organic Chemistry at DCU Dublin (2009-2010) and as a Teaching Fellow (also at DCU in 2011 (Jan-June). From 2011-2012 I became a Teaching Fellow at the University of Southampton, teaching on 3 courses, supervising labs and also having my own project student, and delivering tutorials and workshops. During the period (2012-2013) I worked as a 1-year Lecturer in Biological Chemistry at Manchester Metropolitan University teaching Organic Chemistry and Biochemistry.
I have also worked in industry in India for 5 months during 2007, where I was a Deputy Manager for Dr Reddy's Laboratories in Hyderabad, and helped to start a new group concerned with peptides and enzymatic chemistry.
Since 2014, I have been a Lecturer in Organic and Medicinal Chemistry at Kingston University London, where my duties entail numerous academic responsibilities, including: teaching Organic Chemistry to 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and year Chemistry / Pharm Sci students, Chemistry for Foundation year Life Sciences and also Medicinal Chemistry for 2nd year, 3rd year and OSPAP Pharmacy students.
