Research project: Identifying Classical Art Music in A Modern Popular Music Culture: Rethinking Music in Music Education.

Abstract

Currently, music education research is found to promote popular music learning in schools, often through an informal learning approach, which is not compatible with the traditional Western form of music education. My research will focus on secondary music education. Firstly, this study aims to explore how to framework Key Stage 3 that provides students interested in taking Music GSCE with the necessary knowledge before Key Stage 4 while maintaining an inclusive, accessible, and engaging music education for all children. Secondly, the aim is to test a musical genre crossover learning approach: learning classical music through popular music and music technology and examining a combination of formal with informal learning methods.

Biography

I am a music educator and vocal arranger specialising in classical/ contemporary piano and contemporary vocals. Along with teaching music in primary and secondary schools, I direct and write arrangements for the Benjamin Britten Music Academy Contemporary Vocal Ensemble and prepare students for the school productions. Since Music GCSE still requires understanding and analyses of Western Classical Music, my master's research focused on developing a hypothesis on how to teach classical music through popular music and music technology to Key Stage 3 students. For the past six years, I have been teaching one to one piano and vocals to a range of ages.
