Research project: The effect of lean manufacturing practices, automation, and digitalisation on the resilience and sustainability of automotive components manufacturers in the UK.

Abstract

In recent years, there has been a growing emphasis on sustainability and resilience. This focus is driven by worries about pandemics, environmental effects, and resource depletion. Manufacturers are looking to implement measures to enhance their resilience and sustainability.  Our study investigates the impact of lean, automation, and digitalisation on the financial performance, resilience, and sustainability of automotive suppliers. This study is one of the first studies that presents a framework to integrate lean manufacturing methodologies, automation, digitalisation, resilience, and sustainability at the factory level. The lack of knowledge and research in this area hinders the industry's ability to fully harness the potential of lean, automation, and digitalisation to increase companies' resilience, advance sustainable practises, and improve financial performance. As a result, this research is posited to provide valuable insights for automotive suppliers and other manufacturers aiming to become the sustainable and resilient factories of the future.

Biography

I am currently a PhD researcher in Sustainable Manufacturing Operations and Supply Chain at the Department of Management, Kingston University London, UK. Prior to enrolling in the PhD program, I held many different operations and manufacturing management positions within large and small corporations such as General Motors, Converter Concepts, Johnson & Johnson, and General Electric Aircraft Engines. I also founded my own consulting company geared towards manufacturing process improvement through the adoption of lean methodologies and quality improvement practices. My experience spans different industries and different products such as automobile engines, consumer products, electronics products, and aircraft airfoils. The positions I held range from design engineering to manufacturing and supply chain management. As a PhD researcher at Kingston University London, I plan to collaborate with manufacturing companies and deliver a meaningful contribution to new knowledge in the field of manufacturing and supply chain sustainability, resilience, and financial performance.
