Research project: An investigation into the prevalence of gunshot residue (GSR) in the general environment with respects to its adventitious transfer from legitimate contamination sources

Abstract

The transfer and prevalence of GSR has not been an extensively researched aspect of Forensic Science and is often contested in courts. My research is intended to look at whether or not GSR and it's transfer and prevalence is a notable issue in cases involving firearms and whether or not research can provide insight into its presence in the environment. By looking at legitimate contamination sources i.e armed police officers and gun club members an understanding of how much GSR in the environment could come from these users will be gained. My research will be carried out with the use of a Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM).

Biography

In 2019 I graduated from Kingston University with a 2:1 in Forensic Science and at the time completed a dissertation on the topic of GSR, the research I carried out for this peaked my interest in the subject and once I had graduated I knew I wanted to continue research within the same field. In late 2019 I began a masters by research which focuses more on the transfer of GSR from legitimate contamination sources.
