In examining the determinants of companies' ESG performance, prior studies have majorly explored the relationship between governance and financial characteristics, and ESG performance. Most of these studies have restricted these determinants of ESG performance to governance characteristics such as independence, gender diversity etc at the board level and indicators of firm financial performance such as ROA, ROE, TA etc. Furthermore, studies assessing companies' commitment to sustainability and its relationship to ESG performance have also explore the same or wider governance and financial variables. The purpose of my study is to investigate other non-governance and financial variables that influence companies' commitment to sustainability and its relationship to ESG performance both at the board and management levels. The study will further develop a disclosure index for measuring board and management commitment to sustainability/ESG.
