Research project: Imaging Assessment of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tumours; Advancing Methodologies and Applications

Abstract

Accurate disease detection is critical for optimal outcomes in haematological-malignancies. However, the appropriate use of imaging tests requires awareness of their strengths and limitations. I address four key themes in my PhD ‘by prior publications'.

Reporting in haematological malignancies has lacked standardisation. Analogous to UK NICE Guidelines in pathology, I formulated a methodology, termed ‘Specialist Integrated Haematological Malignancy Imaging Reporting'.

Breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma imaging has varied widely. I developed new patient algorithms, subsequently endorsed by UK Guidelines.

Prompt diagnosis of Richter transformation from chronic lymphocytic leukaemia was needed. I formulated a PET-CT driven pathway to decide i) biopsy requirement ii) select representative biopsy site.

Lastly, MRI, used for central nervous system lymphoma imaging, was unable to differentiate disease activity from benign change. I developed two original applications, contrast clearance analysis, and 18F-choline PET-CT.

My thesis advances global imaging methodologies and applications in haematological-malignancies.
