Kingston University has been awarded a Bronze Race Equality Charter Mark recognising the institution's ongoing commitment and action to improve race equity for our staff and students.

Advance HE's Race Equality Charter (REC) aims to help universities and research institutes in their work to improve the representation, progression and success of Black, Asian and minority ethnic people in higher education.

Kingston University is one of 101 Race Equality Charter members and delivers the initiative through the REC Self-Assessment Team (SAT) led by three co-chairs.

As well as helping to identify and address cultural barriers, the Charter provides a framework for action and improvement. Institutions can apply for a bronze or silver award, depending on their level of progress. This award remains valid until May 2029.

In welcoming the achievement, Co-Chair Dr Baljit Thatti said, "The Race Equality Charter Mark has been pivotal in bringing together all our commitments to racial equity for staff and students in a collective and concerted institutional approach."As well as helping to identify and address cultural barriers, the Charter provides a framework for action and improvement.

Co-Chair, Dr Annie Hughes said receiving our REC Award is a fabulous acknowledgement of the progress that we have made on racial equity. "Our journey to advance racial justice will continue through the delivery of our REC action plan which outlines our institutional commitment and priorities over the coming years," she said.

"Staff across KU have been fantastic in supporting the REC submission, and this success is evidence to their dedication and commitment," Co-Chair, Professor Wilson Muleya said. "Without the SAT this task would have been impossible, a huge thank you to all staff."

Mandy Ure, SLT Lead for Equality, Diversity & Inclusion and Race and Ethnicity Sponsor thanked the SAT team and all those who helped the University reach this important milestone. "This wonderful achievement is a testament to all those working hard to ensure equity and inclusion across our University."

Head of the Race Equality Charter, Anne Mwangi said, "REC Bronze is recognition of an institution's robust foundation for eliminating racial inequalities, developing inclusive cultures and moving from commitment to sustainable and integrated bold and ambitious action.

"Advance HE looks forward to supporting Kingston University as it progresses its action plans to advance race equality."
