Kingston University has been shortlisted in two categories in this year's Guardian University Awards.

The awards recognise excellence in the higher education sector and celebrate outstanding achievements, innovation, great student experience and pioneering research and social impact of universities across the United Kingdom.

The University's new flagship Town House building, which opened to the students, staff and the community in January, is vying for top honours in the Buildings that Inspire category. The entry submission describes the building as "a place of inspiration, where teaching and learning, dance, performance, lectures, exhibitions and research co-exist under one roof, and where the door is open to everyone".

The submission adds that Town House is an uplifting space where students and staff can study, but also connect in many ways and learn from each another and other disciplines. "Town House is truly a civic beacon a physical symbol of the importance of shared learning experiences and community in an increasingly digitised world," it adds.

The second shortlisting, in the Guardian Awards' Course, Design, Retention and Student Outcomes category, recognises work undertaken as part of the pharmaceutical science course to bridge the attainment gap and improve the progression of black and minority ethnic students. The course team has implemented a programme of intensive support to maximise students' learning, in particular working with course graduates as role models and mentors.

The awards ceremony is set to take place in the autumn. The full list of nominees has been published on the Guardian website.
