Kingston alumni in Nigeria strengthen their connections

Posted Monday 13 January 2020

At our first ever Nigeria alumni reunion in October 2018, hosted by alumnus Mr Jamil Mohammed Abubakar (BSc Computer Information Systems Design), over 70 alumni and guests flew in from across the country (and even London!) to join the event in Lagos. Alumni were able to meet up with old friends and make new connections, while sharing reflections on their time at Kingston.

Since this inaugural reunion, alumni volunteers have organised a calendar of events including a 'mentoring meet-up' for recent graduates returning to Nigeria, and an Abuja Reunion as part of the Kingston is Global series, that celebrated Kingston connections all over the world in November 2019.

At the events, alumni spoke passionately about how studying at Kingston University has helped them to achieve success, and their desire to make sure others now have this same opportunity.

Mr Ifeanyi Nwachukwu (MSc Investment and Financial Risk Management) is one of the volunteers helping to grow the Nigerian Kingston Alumni Network. "It is important that we share our experiences, advice and provide the support to overcome barriers that many Nigerian students face in pursuing further education and building a successful career".

Local alumni have pledged a range of support from work placements and mentoring for recent graduates, to financially supporting scholarships for students just starting their Kingston journey.

Kingston University is also delighted to welcome Jamil Mohammed Abubakar to this month's Winter Graduations Ceremonies, to give a keynote speech to our new cohort of Computer Science and Digital Media postgraduates.
