Kingston University has teamed up with Fulham Football Club Foundation to kick off a new summer school offering students an insight in to the business world of professional sport.
Combining workshops and training days at the English Championship side with academic sessions delivered by the University, the two-week Business of Football course will delve in to the behind-the-scenes workings of top sports clubs – shedding light on some of the key skills required to forge a successful career in the industry away from the pitch.
Building on an established relationship between Kingston University and the West London football club, the summer school will take in coaching sessions and tours of Fulham FC's home ground Craven Cottage and Motspur Park training facilities as well as visits to top sporting venues such as the All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon and Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park in Stratford.
Workshops will include a look into the role of sport in society, sports journalism, leadership and management skills and events management, led by experts and active professionals. Those completing the course will receive a certificate of attendance from Kingston University.
Head of Short Courses at Kingston University Summer School Kathryn Elliott said the Business of Football course offered a unique opportunity to learn more about business administration of football and the wider sporting world.
"This new programme will appeal to anyone who has an interest in the business side of football, and will give those taking part an insight into the world of sports away from the pitch," Ms Elliott said. "This is the latest collaboration between Fulham Football Club Foundation and Kingston University, and we are excited to be working together on such an innovative programme."
The University first teamed up with Fulham FC in 2015, a partnership which has allowed students to use the platform of an English Football Championship club to hone their skills.
The link up has seen journalism students putting their interview and reporting techniques to the test with professional footballers, while Fulham FC staff have taken advantage of personal development opportunities at Kingston University.
Nathan Archer, development executive at the Fulham Football Club Foundation, said the new programme would combine theory and practice and build upon the strong relationship between the Foundation and Kingston University.
"The combination of a prestigious University and London's oldest football club creates the perfect synergy to provide students with an authentic insight into the business of professional sport," Mr Archer said. "The programme will enable participants to develop the fundamental skills required in the sport and business industries."
The new course will run for two weeks from Sunday 22 July, and is open to both United Kingdom and international students.
