Kingston University achieves European HR Excellence in Research Award

Posted Tuesday 1 March 2016

Kingston University's commitment to research has been recognised with a European Commission HR Excellence in Research Award. Kingston joins an elite group of 268 institutions across Europe to have received the award, 95 of which are in the United Kingdom.

The accolade is awarded by Vitae, a programme dedicated to realising the potential of researchers through transforming their professional development. It acknowledges the fact that Kingston University meets the principles of the European Charter for Researchers and Code of Conduct for their Recruitment. The UK process incorporates both the QAA Code of Practice for Research Degree Programmes and the Concordat to Support the Career Development of Researchers. It also includes ongoing national evaluation and benchmarking.

The Concordat is an agreement between funders and employers of researchers that sets out seven principles around which researchers' careers should be supported. To achieve the award, the University had to demonstrate it had completed a gap analysis of existing policies and practice against the Concordat and had developed a robust action plan as a result. This will have a positive impact on the career development and working conditions of researchers, providing a clear overview of their responsibilities and what they can expect from the University and funders.

Professor Martin McQuillan, Pro Vice-Chancellor for Research and Innovation, said: "We are delighted to have achieved the European Commission HR Excellence in Research Award. It recognises the commitment that the University has made to supporting the careers of our researchers and to developing a thriving research community. The award will also be valuable in enhancing our portfolio of collaborative EU research activity."
