KUDYT is a partnership between Kingston University and the charity Driver Youth Trust. It offers initial teaching training students and partner schools the skills to support pupils who have challenges in reading and writing.
Kingston University's Department of Education launched the project, with the Driver Youth Trust, in 2023.
The project aligns with the University's values and its commitment to ensuring every student graduates with the skills and knowledge most valued by employers.
As part of the project, a research study will examine the impact of the initiative. Students will have the chance to feed back on their experiences, to help develop the programme further and potentially inform similar initiatives at other educational institutions.
Trainee teachers will receive specialist training in how to support children presenting with dyslexia more confidently and effectively. A series of training initiatives will help raise attainment across schools and make the curriculum accessible to all learners.
Caroline Bateman is an educator who has worked with many children and young people who have struggled to access the curriculum because of dyslexia and literacy difficulties. She has been appointed as a full-time specialist dyslexia tutor. She works with students and staff, both in the University and in partner schools, to enhance knowledge of the challenges some students can encounter with reading and writing.
Post-pandemic, many schools have more access to devices that could positively transform their learning but not all know how to access the relevant functionality. Truthfully, "utilising free and widely available technology" is easy to write in an article but can be extremely time consuming in practice. To help, we have launched a KUDYT YouTube channel, Top Tips for Dyslexic Learners, where educators can find short "How to" videos to help them switch on and make the most of functionality that they and their pupils already own but may not be utilising to full advantage.
The channel is at an early stage of development so if you have a technology you are unsure how to use, or hope technology exists that could help you or your pupils in a particular area, please do get in touch. We might be able to create a short video to help you. If you are interested in learning more about the KUDYT project, please email Caroline Bateman
