Living and working in the UK: the perceptions and experiences of migrating social workers

Living and working in the UK: the perceptions and experiences of migrating social workers, with Dr Yohai Hakak, Brunel University.

It is estimated that about 1 in 10 social workers in the UK received their training and qualifications abroad. However, little is known about the impact of country of origin on the way migrating social workers are received, the impact of gender, race and ethnicity, and the factors affecting job and life satisfaction. In this seminar, Yohai Hakak will present recent research that has examined these and other questions relating to the experiences of social workers who have migrated to the UK.  The seminar will provide an opportunity to reflect on how recruiters, employers and professional bodies can address the challenges and difficulties experienced by different groups, with a view to improving support and retention.

Dr Yohai Hakak is a Senior Lecturer in Social Work at Brunel University London. His practice background is in mental health social work. Yohai's research interests are in cultural and religious minorities, the sociology of risk-perception, youth, parenting, gender and mental health, and in the connection of these areas with social work.
