Using the word ‘sustainability' is like dropping a bomb in polite conversation. Rather than opening up productive discussion about social and ecological concerns, it can close down discussion before its even started. The urgency of doing something about climate change, loss of biodiversity, and other challenges wrapped up in the word ‘sustainability' is not yet met by an appetite to talk meaningfully about it. It just seems too big to tackle.
This showcase of projects by graduating students of MA Sustainable Design seeks to explode the S-bomb. We can't not talk about sustainability – the stakes are too high. Each student has been on their own journey as a designer seeking to address sustainability. Each route has been different. Together, they show ways forward to do something useful.
