Speaker(s): Dr Fiona Peters, Independent researcher, trainer and consultant
More about the speaker:
Dr Fiona Peters is a sociologist and researcher in the area of mixedness and the residential care system. Her book ‘Fostering Mixed Race Children' is based on her research and offers a narrative of the experiences of children and families; specifically examining how social processes around racial classification impact on the matching processes and stability of their residential placements.
Abstract
The mixed race classification is known to be a factor of disadvantage in children's social care and this fastest growing population is more likely than any other ethnic group to experience care admission. In my talk, I discuss the ideas that underpin how mixed race families are perceived by society and the impact this has on children's and families experiences within the care system; specifically the over representation of children in care as well as the impact on matching and longevity of placement. Through narrative interviews undertaken during a year long study and analysis utilising rigorous social theory, I offer evidence that a deeper understanding of the complexity of race, ethnic and cultural classification is required to truly meet the needs of this growing population and this has policy and practical implications.
