Speaker(s): Malcolm Paul
Today, more and more businesses are focusing their strategy on mergers and acquisitions to fuel growth and meet the needs of their customers, often in expanding geographical areas. Spurred by robust economies and low interest rates buying businesses to grow remains an important tool for those with the ambition to rapidly build a successful business.
This is not a new strategy but whilst it appears a straight forward solution there are many practical issues to be considered to make a buy and build strategy a commercial success. Buying or selling a business is a traumatic experience for the principals involved and is not for the faint hearted but with an insight into what drives a successful transaction it remains a key driver for value creation.
Malcolm is a Chartered Accountant who went to school at Tiffin Boys and then to Kingston University where he took a conversion course for his business studies. During his early career he built a successful general accountancy practice based in the City of London, specialising in working with larger corporates and in particular advising clients on acquisitions and mergers. Subsequently he formed his own corporate finance boutique to continue that work and increase his knowledge of the City and the workings of the London Stock Exchange. Moving from advising clients to acting as a principal himself he and a colleague invested in a small consulting engineering business based in Surrey and using a buy and build strategy delivered strong growth increasing turnover from £3m to £¾billion and a place in the FTSE 250. He is presently Chairman of Anthesis Consulting Group which is a specialist global environmental and sustainability business creating an international capability to provide clients with cross border advice and support. He is also senior non-executive director of James Fisher & Sons Plc, a FTSE 250 multinational company specialising in marine services. During his career Malcolm has advised on or acquired for his own account more than 200 businesses on five continents. He continues to travel extensively both for business and pleasure.
